Three wildcard signings Wrexham should consider in summer transfer window

The summer transfer window has been relatively quiet for Wrexham who are taking their time when it comes to adding new players.

The good news is there are several deals that appear to be imminent and Phil Parkinson will no doubt be keeping tabs on plenty of players who could strengthen his squad before deadline day.

With that in mind, here are three players that the club should consider signing before they embark on their first Championship campaign in 43 years.

Calum Chambers

As solid as they were at the back last season, Wrexham could still do with another experienced centre-back capable of playing out from the back and providing some help on set pieces.

Calum Chambers has not only played in nearly 200 Premier League fixtures, but he’s also a strong chance creator, having created 24 last season at Cardiff City, according to FotMob. He can play accurate long balls, had over 50 touches in the opposition box last season, is strong in the air and won his share of possessions in the attacking third.

His current market value is £1.8 million, according to Transfermarket, and he’s under contract with Cardiff until June 2027. That said, they are now in League One, and at the age of 30 Chambers would likely want a shot to get back into the Premier League, a chance he probably won’t get on his current team.

Danny Ward (no, not him)

Adding the former Huddersfield Town striker may create confusion for everyone, given there’s already a Danny Ward at the club.  At the same time, the 34-year-old native of Bradford has plenty he can bring to the table.

Rotherham United’s Player of the Year in 2016-17 has a reputation for being a fantastic super sub.  With Steven Fletcher out of the picture, Ward is more than capable of filling that role for the Scotsman.

Ward has a similar profile to Fletcher as he’s strong in the air, provides energy off the bench and boasts plenty of experience at that level. Ward’s current market value per Transfermarkt is £100,000, and given his track record in the second tier, he could prove to be a steal.

Ruben Colwill

Dynamic creativity in the middle of the pitch was sorely missing at Wrexham last season. At 23, Ruben Colwill not only brings a ball of energy but also possesses a ton of skill on the ball, can pick out front players, and can do a lot of damage in the attacking third.

Colwill would likely have to join on loan, but Cardiff City may no longer be an ideal place for him, given their relegation last season. He’s oozing with talent and creativity and will want exposure from Premier League sides, something he’s more likely to get at Wrexham.

Wrexham have plenty of workhorses in midfield, but with Andy Cannon still sidelined and Ollie Rathbone the latest injury setback, they’re missing a player with the attacking capabilities and creativity of Colwill.
