Wrexham vs Exeter City: Team news, form guide, predicted line-ups

Wrexham can maintain their unbeaten record at the Racecourse Ground this season when they host Exeter City on Saturday in League One action.

It’s the first time these sides will ever face each other in a competitive league fixture, with Wrexham sitting third following a 1-0 defeat at Stockport County, while the Grecians are ninth, playing to a 0-0 draw with Lincoln City the last time out.

November’s been a difficult month for Phil Parkinson’s side, winning just once across all competitions and dropping them outside of the two automatic promotional places.

They’ll face an Exeter squad that have won two of their previous three away fixtures in this competition but were beaten in their last game outside St James Park by Huddersfield (2-0).

Wrexham’s goalscoring woes

Wrexham began the League One campaign in sensational attacking form, scoring multiple times in four of their opening five contests. That quality has dried up, netting a goal or fewer in six of their previous seven competitive games.

A lack of finish has been noticeable on the part of Paul Mullin, who’s netted just once in 13 League One appearances this season and chances may be hard to come by against Gary Caldwell’s team, who’ve conceded the fewest goals this season (10). Crystal Palace loanee Joe Whitworth has maintained the joint-most clean sheets thus far (nine).

Home Comforts

Times haven’t been easy for Wrexham, lately but between now and the end of the year, there’s a genuine opportunity for them to make a move.

Six of their final eight League One affairs this year take place at the Racecourse Ground, where they have won six of their seven matches in this competition.

The Reds have outscored their seven opponents in North Wales by a combined margin of 17-4, claiming a league-high 19 home points in 2024-25. They are averaging 2.86 goals per game at the Racecourse Ground, but their weekend opponents have allowed a league-best 1.86 goals per game as the visitors.

Team news

Wrexham’s Jack Marriott remains sidelined with a broken fibula, Steven Fletcher is doubtful with a sore knee, Arthur Okonkwo is out due to a wrist fracture, Luke Bolton has a calf strain, and George Evans continues to recover from torn ankle ligaments. Andy Cannon will be forced out this weekend after collecting another caution last Saturday.

On the opposite side, Exeter won’t have Patrick Jones available due to a hamstring strain, Yanic Wildschut is out long-term with a cruciate ligament injury, while the vastly experienced Ryan Woods will be suspended.

Paul Mullin was benched to begin the previous Wrexham clash, while Callum Burton kept his side in that contest with six stops. Caldwell has called on Northern Irishman Josh Magennis to step up, netting just four times in 15 competitive fixtures this season.

Predicted XI

Wrexham: Burton; Barnett, Cleworth, Scarr, O’Connor, McClean; Rathbone, Dobson, Lee; Palmer, Mullin

Exeter City: Whitworth; Sweeney, Crama, Purrington; McMillan, Richards, Francis, Mitchell; Watts, Aitchison; Magennis
