Wrexham are building for long-term success in the summer transfer window

It’s been another busy off-season for Wrexham on the summer transfer market, but one which could spell great things for them in the present and future.

Not only have they signed several of their key contributors to long-term deals, but they’ve also made some strong investments in youth.

What signings will benefit Wrexham in the present?

Plenty of key figures have contributed to Wrexham being able to earn back-to-back promotions, and those individuals will be counted on next season.

While Paul Mullin will likely miss the early portion of the League One season, he’s still their biggest attacking threat, netting 24 domestic goals last season.

Arthur Okonkwo proved his value between the stick, posting 16 domestic clean sheets and Tom O’Connor did an admirable job filling in when Wrexham had plenty of walking-wounded defenders last season.

George Dobson could prove to be a massive bargain, coming to Wrexham this summer on a free transfer from Charlton, who briefly played top-flight football in the Netherlands for Sparta Rotterdam. He’s got more experience as a centre-back but was trained at West Ham to be a central midfielder. All of those players mentioned have committed to Wrexham until 2027. Steven Fletcher signed a one-year extension and will have an opportunity to prove himself early on with Mullin nursing an injury.

What signings will benefit Wrexham in the future?

Wrexham have also invested in some youngsters who should benefit them in the years to come.

Max Cleworth was voted the club’s Young Player of the Season again in 2023-24 and is nearing 100 appearances for them across all competitions. He showed at times last season that he can be solid and robust, but there’s also room for him to grow.

Lewis Brunt has top-flight experience with Leicester City and is coming off an outstanding loan campaign at Mansfield Town. He’s got experience and stability, plus plenty of versatility, and, like Dobson, he could play in various positions on the field.

Finally, Harry Dean signed a first-team contract earlier this summer and has a lot of raw talent. He’s played his part in helping the youth squad succeed domestically and will get a chance to hone his craft even more, hopefully with some cup minutes as well.

Who knows if the squad has enough to earn another promotion next season?

Time will tell whether they’re that good, but there’s a solid mix of youth and veterans on this squad that should set them up to remain in League One.

Overall, there are many positive aspects to the moves they’ve made now, and many should pay off in future years.
