Five realistic League One strikers Wrexham should consider signing
Wrexham could be keen on adding a new striker with League One experience to the fold this summer. The Red Dragons have plenty of proven strikers like Paul Mullin, Ollie Palmer and Steven Fletcher, who will be key to their success in League One.
That said, there are some solid attackers available that could add something to Phil Parkinson’s side next season and who the club will want to consider signing.
While there were rumours of interest in Alfie May and Devante Cole being available, I'm going with strikers who are not either under contract and/or, would look at League One teams.
Here's a look at five realistic League One strikers on the market and how they'd benefit Wrexham.
Connor Wickham
Wickham had a temporary spell at Charlton Athletic where he scored just once in four League One appearances. The 31-year-old has experience in the English football pyramid, with Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship to Crystal Palace and Sunderland in the Premier League.
During his time with the Black Cats, he was a teammate of current Wrexham striker Steven Fletcher. Wickham can play as a striker and on the wing, and though he's not a prolific goalscorer, he can provide some solid link-up play, and be a great depth piece.
Shayne Lavery
At 25 years old, Shayne Lavery has a good balance of youthfulness and experience. That could be one of the many appeals of bringing him to Wales, as most of the current Wrexham strikers are in their late 20s or above 30.
Lavery had five goals in 31 appearances for Blackpool last season but has shown an ability to find the back of the net in the past with 47 goals in 77 matches at Linfield.
Daniel Udoh
In what was a dismal 2023-24 League One campaign for Shrewsbury Town, Daniel Udoh was one of the bright spots. The 27-year-old Nigerian led the team with 10 goals and picked up three assists last season.
He's used to playing as a striker, but he can also play the wing, netting double-digits in goals for the Shrews in two of the past three seasons. Shrewsbury employed numerous formations, so adapting to a Wrexham style should be fine.
Would he be willing to join a Wrexham side as a depth piece and not the main guy up front may be the bigger question surrounding him?
Sean Maguire
At 30, Sean Maguire still has plenty to give, along with experience in the higher levels of the EFL pyramid. The Irish international played for Carlisle United this past season but has also spent time with Coventry and Preston North End, as well as West Ham.
Maguire is an influential, advanced playmaker who could create quality scoring chances for Mullin and Palmer.
Stephen Humphreys
The final player on my list is Stephen Humphreys, whose contract at Wigan has expired. In his last two seasons in League One, he had double-digits in goals for Wigan and Rochdale, respectively.
He's only 26, has a fantastic work rate and is strong at winning balls back, a skill that perhaps many don't look at when assessing a striker. I don't know if he can score 15+ goals, but he still has some value and can provide energy off the bench and give the regulars a break.
